Sean Penn Tells Sean Hannity: ‘The Ukrainians Will Win This!’?
Sean Penn, an actor and documentary filmmaker, appeared on Hannity on Tuesday to talk about his time in Ukraine during the Russian invasion. Penn, who had already visited the country last fall to produce a documentary about the Ukraine-Russia war, also spoke about the relief efforts that his non-profit organisation is directing.
The extended debate between two Seans who don't agree on much was civil, with Penn admitting from the start that, despite his doubts about Hannity's credibility, he could reach a large audience with what he had to say.
Hannity asked Penn about his meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky as the war was taking form early in the discussion. "Did he foresee this? Was he convinced that this was true? " enquired the Fox News host.
Following a covid-related delay, Penn claimed that filming for the documentary began in November, when "we travelled to Mariupol on the front lines." As Russia continued to build soldiers on its border, Penn said it was difficult to gain access to the government. "Then this problem really escalated" when February arrived.
"So then we travelled – I suppose we got there about a week before the invasion, and we met him," Penn explained. I met him for the first time the day before the invasion, and then spent time with him throughout the invasion – on the day of the invasion – which we chronicle in the video. I'm not sure anyone on this planet could know they were born for such a day, or that they could rise to the occasion. So I noticed–"
At this point, Hannity inquired about the timing of the meeting, to which Penn stated that it took place at the same time as Russian soldiers were attacking Hostomel Airport, roughly 20 miles outside of Kyiv. (The Ukrainian opposition was fierce, and the landing strips were too badly damaged for Russian forces to utilise.)
Penn resumed his speech:
"So – in [Zelensky], I saw something I'd never seen before in my life that – like I said, having seen him, yes, prepared me for it." Yes, I was praying against hope that it wouldn't come to that. But a man who hasn't yet been confronted with the words: 'It's happening.'"
